Surface charge dependence of polyelectrolyte-induced domain size and composition in lipid bilayer membranes
Article Abstract:
Choline-deuterated 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) has been studied using 2H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy on its response to changes in the surface charge of lipid bilayer membranes. These membranes are made up of mixtures of POPC and cationic polyelectrolyte poly(vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride) (PVTA). Results show the NMR spectra has two overlapping Pake powder patterns showing the existence of two lipid domains. There was no indication that nonbilayer lipid arrangements exist.

Characterization of phase transitions and dynamics in reentrant nematic liquid crystals by xenon-129 nuclear magnetic resonance
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the detection of phase transitions and characterization of the dynamics in binary and tertiary reentrant nematic liquid crystal mixtures through 129Xe nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts and spin-spin and spin-lattice relaxation times. The 129Xe spin-spin and spin-lattice relaxation times were sensitive to the presence of phase transitions. Results indicated that the chemical shift and spin relaxation times vary monotonically with temperature through the smectic phase.
