Getting to know U: real walls sometimes don't seem to provide the thermal insulation required in the brief. But it's not easy to establish the truth, because there has never been a way of measuring the U-valve of a wall in situ-until now
Article Abstract:
A trained physicist and former building company owner Bob Galbraith, and colleague Bill Brown, have developed a method of measuring the U-value of walls in situ. Very often prescribed methods for sound insulation between adjoining properties do not work in practice, and the thermal insulation values of walls are also likely to vary. The proposed method involves a panel of polyisocynaurate with a temperature cell which is placed in close contact with an interior wall to measure its face temperature.
