Terminal 5 design is frozen: planning extension forces BAA to put Britain's biggest construction project on hold
Article Abstract:
BAA has frozen design work on Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5, delaying the next work stage by up to nine months, and in some cases, by a year. This follows the planning inquiry into the project which was expected to last just 18 months to November 1996, but the conclusion is not now expected until June 1998. The predicted opening for the first phase had been 2003, but it will now be 2004. Many companies appointed to Terminal 5 could face a reduction in fee income and others are concerned that if the ruling is in favour, there will be a need to speed up the postponements, possibly resulting in undermined quality.

RFAC checks out supermarket design
Article Abstract:
The Royal Fine Art Commission, which is the UK government's advisory body on design, will hold a seminar in December 1996 to consider town centre supermarket design. A booklet on good supermarket design will follow in mid-1997. Department of the Environment policy is to promote town-centre shopping, but the RFAC believes supermarkets cannot use the blank wall design seen in out-of-town supermarkets in this sort of environment. Controversy over a Tesco planning application for Ludlow town centre was an incentive for the seminar.
