Article Abstract:
The UK's top 50 housebuilders and contractors saw turnover rise by 20% in 1998 from 1997 to 35 billion pounds sterling, with pre-tax profit rising by 30% to 1.6 billion pounds sterling. Average housebuilding operating margins rose to almost 12%, from 10% in 1997, while contracting margins were an average of 1.3%, from 1%. The leading contractors and housebuilders by 1998 turnover were Amec, Tarmac and Bovis Construction, while the leaders by pre-tax profit were Tarmac, Berkeley and Taylor Woodrow.

There is strong interest among UK construction firms in BAA's second-generation framework agreements. Most observers have expressed positive views about the new frameworks, which will provide around 10 years of work but require suppliers to pass an annual test.

A survey is presented which gives details of the top 100 contractors and housebuilders in the United Kingdom in 2000. The top 50 companies accounted for 85% of the turnover in the top 100 companies.
