Computer theft is costing industry around 200 million pounds a year, according to figures from the Association of British Insurers. The cost of computer theft to a small- or medium-sized business is some 90,000 pounds sterling, with around 5% of businesses in 1996-7 suffering from the crime. Companies can protect themselves from computer theft by including the computer in contents insurance, ensuring that their computers are protected with security markings, and physically securing computers to desks.
