The more, the merrier - and the more effective

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of an internal auditing process is greatly enhanced by the quantity of employees that participate in the process. This was realized by Parker Hannifin Corp's Zenith Pumps Division when it sought the participation of its employees in conducting quality system audits as it prepared for compliance to ISO 9001 in 992. Such an internal auditing system required the establishment of some components, such as audit checklists, auditor training, audit schedules, reporting format, and results follow-up. Even auditors from third-party certification groups have acknowledged the effectiveness of Parker Hannifin's system.

How to develop a more effective audit checklist

Article Abstract:

An effective audit checklist can be developed by including evaluation criteria, audit points, information to be verified, and space for presenting objective evidence. One of the most common failures in audit checklist is the style of the question being asked. Phrasing a question or audit point in such a fashion as to elicit a narrative response is a more effective style of audit checklist. The checklist prepared by Lockheed Martin Space Information Systems for both internal and external audits is based on the narrative approach.

Process-product integrity audits: a hardware auditing technique for the '90s

Article Abstract:

A process-product integrity audit was used by NASA to find problems in quality systems. Firstly, the facts about work instruction and production stages needed to be gathered systematically. The facts were then verified to check if all areas were covered and whether the causes and remedial plans tallied with the findings. This was followed by the execution of an appropriate remedial plan, which could be a result of combining various findings together. This audit system can supplement the quality process without replacing it.
