Classifying the supermarket food waste stream
Article Abstract:
Supermarkets contribute to the food waste generated by food retail outlets, which generates the highest volume of commercial food waste. This supermarket food wastes are usually disposed of in various ways including transport to landfills. With the dramatic increase in landfill tipping fees and environmental pressure from customers, supermarkets are considering to have their own waste management operations. To this end, a recent study on classification and determination of supermarket food wastes in various time intervals aims to help waste management planners of supermarkets.

Source sampling for waste characterization
Article Abstract:
The limitations of traditional waste characterization schemes necessitated the use of new methods for recycling program planning. Research undertaken by the Ventura County Solid Waste Management Department determined the effectiveness of the source sampling method in waste characterization. Findings revealed unique residential waste disposal and diversion profiles in cities of Moorpark, Ojai, Simi Valley, and Ventura County. A correlation between waste generation and financial status was also observed.

Feasibility of large-scale organics diversion
Article Abstract:
The Seattle/King County (WA) Commercial Food Waste Composting Demonstration Project has shown that a program for collecting and composting commercial food wastes is technically feasible. The results of a cost study indicate that a full-scale commercial food waste program, to be economically viable, would require public involvement. The methods of and barriers to implementing such a program are discussed.
