Clean up at munitions sites
Article Abstract:
Windrow composting is a cost effective method of treating hazardous wastes such as munitions and is being used by US military bases for waste treatment. The bioremediation method involves a thermophilic microbial consortium to degrade the explosive materials in the soil. The growth of the bacteria is supported by potato wastes, alfalfa, and cow and chicken manure. The Naval Submarine Base, Washington, will remove TNT and other explosive from two of its sites by this composting method. The predicted cost of composting is less than 1/2 that of incinerating the soil.

Did the Clean Air Act cause the remarkable decline in sulfur dioxide concentrations?
Article Abstract:
An investigation is conducted to know whether the 1970 Clean Air Act and its subsequent amendments caused decline in the concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2). The evidence suggest that the nonattainment designation play a minor role in the dramatic reduction of SO2 concentrations over the last 30 years.
