Measuring effectiveness of organics collection
Article Abstract:
Green Waste Systems (GWS) are being tried in some towns in Denmark that have created their own system of collection and treatment of garbage. The absence of new dumps and the government's decision to pay for a part of the GWS are encouraged the promotion of the system in many areas. In GWS, organic waste is collected in containers, once or twice a week, and processed at an assigned facility. The success of GWS is dictated by participation rates and the quality of contributed materials from participants. It was also theconsensus that a general home composting scheme would give the same results as that of GWS.

San Francisco takes residential organics collection full-scale
Article Abstract:
A new residential waste program is being rolled-out by the County of San Francisco and Sunset Scavenger Co., a subsidiary of Norcal Waste Systems, in response to a 1996 study which revealed that some 26% of the residential waste stream was accounted for by food. The Fantastic Three program involves separate collections for compostables, trash and commingled recyclables. Side-loading split compactor vehicles collect recyclables and rubbish using a 40/60 volume compartment split. The program will be rolled out to over 75% of the city's households, beginning in February 2000.
