Waging battle on the waste stream
Article Abstract:
Waste Warriors is a partnership between the Washington State University (WSU) Cooperative Extension and the Island County Solid Waste Department. Volunteers are trained to educate the community and promote home composting, recycling and reduction. Waste Warriors take free classes over six weeks, together with weekend field trips and community service. Waste Warriors have participated in education and distribution, teaching residents how to building a compost container from reused material.

The ripple effect of backyard bins

Residents of the City of Plano, Texas, are being encouraged to take part in composting waste disposal programmes. The community's Plano Solid Waste Department has used funding from the Environmental Protection Agency to activate and maintain education programmes on local waste management in the area. Research indicates that 19.4 tons of grass clippings are recycled every year in the community. Over half the city's residents are taking part in the programme composting.

Strategic marketing for composted biosolids
Article Abstract:
The Hornsby Bend Wastewater Treatment Facility in Austin, Texas, produces and sells biosolids compost called Dillo Dirt valuing more than 110,000 US dollars. Retail consumers pay between 20 and 25 US dollars per cubic yard for a Dillo Dirt delivery. Wholesale consumers pay seven US dollars per cubic yard on collection. The compost meets EPA Part 503 Class A stipulations and is rigorously tested for pathogens.
