Effects of life course transitions on the quality of relationships between adult children and their parents

Article Abstract:

The effects of life course transitions undergone by each generation on changes in the adult child-parent relationship were studied by examining information from the 1987-1988 and 1992-1994 waves of the National Survey of Families and Households. Findings showed a significant variability in child-parent relationships. About 20% of relationships decline and 20% experience an improvement in relationships. Parental divorce and deterioration of parents' health cause a decline in the relationships.

Residential mobility as a way of life: Evidence of intergenerational similarities

Article Abstract:

The way in which an individual's early experiences of residential mobility in the family of origin is linked to the experiences of residential mobility in adulthood is examined, using two family-of-origin models. It was found that those who moved often as children, move more often as adults and were more likely to move as a response to life course transitions.
