Gift giving and the emotional significance of family and friends

Article Abstract:

Researchers have investigated gift giving in western society, particularly considering whether there is a link between the closeness of social relationships and the purity of the gift. Efforts were made to construct an emotional hierarchy on the basis of an analysis of the feelings which are associated with gift giving. It was established that gift giving within primary family relationships still seems to play a key role in western society. There is a strong difference between the importance of gift giving to friends and to other family members.
