Article Abstract:

New laws in Belgium dictate the time limits for authorisation grants for a site application to sell or make foodstuffs. French turkey farmers have failed in their attempt to stop a German poultry advert from being used, although negotiations are continuing. Value added tax (VAT) payments in Ireland for bread and confectionary is expected to be removed. It currently stands at 12.5% but is unlike the rest of the United Kingdom, which has no VAT on such items.

The European Commission is to decide if novel foods are to be labelled with nutritional and composition information. Food regulations are expected to be changed so that they are easier to use. Foodstuff hygiene rules covering animal origin and animal welfare legislation are been considered. Baby foods laws will be changed to tighten labelling, composition and advertising. Artificial sweeteners should be highlighted when being used in foodstuffs.

Article Abstract:

United Biscuit of the United Kingdom has announced pre-tax profits of #110m. One reason for ths was the reduction in the workforce by around 2,000 to 24,000 in 1998.
