Brussels rejects "premature" criticisms of proposed olive oil aid scheme
Article Abstract:
A spokesman for the European Union's Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler says that criticism of the planned olive oil aid scheme is premature. Spanish producers have been actively opposing the new scheme, which would give Spain a quota of 538,000 t, slightly over half its total output in 1996, while Italy's maximum guaranteed output will rise to 445,000 t. The new system, if adopted, will be phased in over a two year period beginning in 1998/99. Olive oil output in the EU in 1997 amounted to 1.35 million t, much more than was needed.
