The Viable System Model: Its Provenance, Development, Methodology and Pathology
Article Abstract:
The Viable System Model (VSM) was developed to explain how systems are viable. The history of the system's development is traced. The methodology of topological maps is considered and leads to a discussion on mapping and measuring complexity. Limitations of the system which are refuted include the free will of people and the difference in applying the system to an individual and to society. The VSM is detailed, including a chart. The propriety of using the pathology concept with VSM is reviewed. A diagram shows Beer's account of scientific modelling. Appendices include the theory of VSM in operational research, a glossary and applications.
