Strategies of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization for the control of iron deficiency in Latin America

Article Abstract:

Iron deficiency is a major nutritional health problem of the world, one which the Pan American Health Organization as part of the World Health Organization has developed strategies to fight. The devastating anemia that may result from iron deficiency is associated with possibly irreversible physical and mental retardation in children, fatigue and weakened immune systems in adults. There are approximately two billion people with iron deficiency worldwide, of whom over half are anemic.

Preventing iron deficiency in infants and preschool children in Argentina

Article Abstract:

The incidence of iron deficiency in children in Argentina seems to be associated with drinking pasteurized unfortified cow's milk since infancy. A variety of studies have been done since the late 1970s in such population centers as Buenos Aires, Tierra del Fuego, and the poor and rural Misiones province. The proposed solution to this problem has been iron-fortified milk for schoolchildren drinking unfortified milk and supplementing that with iron-fortified cookies.
