Debbie Stabenow, US senator from Michigan

Debbie Stabenow is Michigan's first female US senator, narrowly defeating the one-term Republican incumbent, Spencer Abraham, in one of the country's most closely watched senate races. Stabenow gained a national reputation as a centrist Democrat, who embraces her party's traditional stances on many issues and is perhaps best known for advocating the inclusion of prescription-drug coverage in Medicare.
