As North Korea liberalises, sanctions should be eased
Article Abstract:
Denny Roy's argument that United States should review its policy towards North Korea and ease the economic sanctions against it, is completely valid. The ongoing process of economic liberalization of the former Communist nation and talks with the West have signalled a change in its attitude and military policy. Although Korean insecurity is evident, the non-aggressive conception in Roy's analysis fails to take North Korea's behavior in the Cold War years. North Korea had previously enjoyed the military and economic support of China and Soviet Union and assumed defiance towards US.

Feel their pain (if you like), but watch their actions
Article Abstract:
The West should encourage North Korea to take steps towards political and economic liberalization and show that the process is not threatening to its political survival. Denny Roy's supposition that North Korea acts out of anxiety is wrong as its past and present behavior is in accordance with its national interests and strategies. The mounting economic crises in the country have led it to a path of liberalization. Limited knowledge of the state of affairs in the country has allowed the benefit of doubt to its intentions.

What if North Korea survives?
Article Abstract:
The broad assumption that North Korea will either reform or collapse is unfounded. The US, Japan and South Korea should pay more attention to their long-term objectives and ensure that they adopt measures to open North Korea up and reduct its threat to its neighbours. There should be a strong focus on unification to ensure long-term goals.
