Beyond 'terrorism' and 'state hegemony': Assessing the Islamist mainstream in Egypt and Malaysia
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to trace the considerable contributions of mainstream Islamist movements towards the development of civil society in Egypt and Malaysia, rather than limiting discourses of political Islam to the clashes between 'Islamic terrorism' and 'the state'. It is showed that moderate Islamic groups have had a considerable impact on processes of democratisation and the emergence of civil society during the quarter century since the 'Islamic resurgence'.
