Capital punishment: the fragmentation of Colombia and the crisis of the nation-state

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the crisis faced by the Colombian nation-state in which state power is being contested by paramilitaries, drug cartels, corrupt officials, and the revolutionary Left. The author, stating the attempts to develop a strong nation-state has failed due to the oligarchy's inability to implement constitutional changes while maintaining control over their power, argues Colombia's neoliberal restructuring of the economy has brutally hurt the underclass and has created further fragmentation of the nation.
