Hindu women's property rights in India: A critical appraisal
Article Abstract:
The legal developments in the Indian context is analyzed to highlight the shortcomings of the right to property even though this is protected by law and it is seen that legal rights guaranteed to Hindu women are by and large not exercised by them. It is emphasized that legal strategies have a role to play in removing entrenched inequalities in society and it is essential that the idea underlying a particular claim be critically evaluated in the light of legal, historical, political and cultural contexts.

Article Abstract:
Some contrasting experiences of constitutional design showing wider lessons for feminists exploring effective strategies to enhance gender rights are examined. The opportunities that constitutional design can provide to embed women's rights more securely and create an enabling framework that can subsequently be used to enhance all forms of women's rights, not just civil and political ones are highlighted.
