The relevance of the 'irrelevant': football as a missing dimension in the study of British relations with Germany
Article Abstract:
Sports have often been regarded as irrelevant to international relations, yet rivalry between the professional soccer teams of Germany and Britain through the 20th century often reflects political relations between these nations. Three international competitions during 2000-1 and bids to host the 2006 World Cup tournament have shown how England-Germany footballing encounters are often expressed in world war imagery.
