Rethinking the laws: Norplant as a condition of probation for female child abusers
Article Abstract:
A California state court has ordered a woman convicted of child abuse to use a contraceptive called Norplant as a condition of probation. The measure was in response to the growing incidence of child abuse in the country. However, imposing Norplant as a condition of probation for female child abusers is not constitutionally permissible at present. It will only become so if a similar birth-control method for men is developed and imposed as a condition of probation for male child abusers.

Regulating rites: legal responses to female genital mutilation in the West
Article Abstract:
US laws that ban the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) is nothing more than political grandstanding instead of genuine attempts to eliminate the practice. This is because laws such as the Dept of Defense Omnibus Appropriations Bill are implemented at the federal level rather than mandated by the states. Another loophole is that the laws are directed at particular religious and cultural groups which gives the impression of a cultural bias.

Law, life and literature: using literature and life to expose transracial adoption laws as adoption on a one-way street
Article Abstract:
The authors argue that laws allowing interracial adoption of children are inherently suspect because they permit an inherently a one-way process, in which African-American children are adopted by white people. The negative effects of being raised by white families are discussed.
