U.S. firms benefit from Japan's 'Big Bang' reforms; U.S. financial services firms soon may be able to enter Japanese markets with ease
Article Abstract:
Japan's sweeping reform proposals for its financial services industry, accepted by the Ministry of Finance on Jun 13, 1997, greatly enhance US firms' opportunities to capture a share of the Japanese financial markets. The proposals will allow free market entry to any registered US firm that meets minimal requirements. Uniform regulation of the industry will be undertaken by the Financial Services Bureau, a new agency. Many industry functions will be drastically deregulated, which should enhance competition and lead to the introduction of a variety of new financial products and services.
