Chronicle of S.F. papers makes its own news
Article Abstract:
The possible demise of the 'San Francisco Examiner' newspaper has set off a series of corporate intrigues and political manuevering, leading to a federal antitrust trial suit. The trial exposed the eagerness of the newspaper's executives to resort to political solutions, such as the offer of the newspaper's publisher for favorable editorials to Mayor Willie Brown during his reelection campaign. 'SF Weekly' editor John Mecklin said the issue is a scramble of intersecting lives, personalities and motives that could be speculated for an entire evening.

Calif. cities turning away dot.coms
Article Abstract:
California cities are turning away Internet companies due to the increasing congestion in the downtown retail areas and industrial districts. The severe shortage of office spaces has driven dot.com firms into the peninsula, creating a surge in commercial rents. It has also driven old-economy tenants out which is feared to erode the character and vitality of the downtowns. Also, the imbalance is pushing workers farther out, resulting in clogged freeways as they are forced to commute back to their jobs.

Las Vegas is taking homeowners downtown
Article Abstract:
Las Vegas, NV, officials are looking to revitalize the city's neglected, decrepit downtown area. A key part of their urban planning strategy is to capture a piece of the region's considerable residential housing demand and build housing units downtown. Las Vegas, like its other sister cities across the West, is emulating its eastern counterparts by converting its downtown into mixed-use developments containing offices, housing, retail and entertainment.
