Global crisis triggers job cuts, buyouts

Companies in the US are feeling the effects of the global financial crisis, with a number of firms announcing layoffs. According to data from outplacement company Challenger Gray & Christmas, 73,062 layoffs were announced by US firms in September 1998, the biggest monthly total since January 1996. Over 60% of the firms blamed international factors for the job cuts. Among the companies that announced job cuts are Merrill/Lynch, Raytheon, Gillette and Hewlett-Packard. Despite the spate of layoffs, the US economy is still healthy, with unemployment at a low 4.6%.

Fixing windshields shatters expectation

Cindy Rowe Auto Glass is a Harrisburg, PA-based company that specializes in fixing and replacing windshields. Founded in 1980 by Cindy Rowe, a nurse by profession, the company has fixed over 40,000 windshields annually at 10 branches across central Pennsylvania. Cindy Rowe used some creating marketing methods to get customers when she first started the business. At present, the company employs nine people and posted $5.5 million revenues in 1998.
