Global crisis triggers job cuts, buyouts

Article Abstract:

Companies in the US are feeling the effects of the global financial crisis, with a number of firms announcing layoffs. According to data from outplacement company Challenger Gray & Christmas, 73,062 layoffs were announced by US firms in September 1998, the biggest monthly total since January 1996. Over 60% of the firms blamed international factors for the job cuts. Among the companies that announced job cuts are Merrill/Lynch, Raytheon, Gillette and Hewlett-Packard. Despite the spate of layoffs, the US economy is still healthy, with unemployment at a low 4.6%.
