Spoils of war: for years, all Afghanistan has known is conflict. Michael Maher asks whether this deeply divided land has a future as a nation

Article Abstract:

The capture of Osama bin Laden and the toppling of the Taliban will present big problems for the US and its allies, for no one knows yet how to go about rebuilding war-torn Afghanistan. Those countries surrounding Afghanistan are using ethnic divisions within Afghanistan to advance their own agendas. Hopes for rebuilding the country are guarded for many reasons, the most compelling of which may be the fact that there will be nothing left to salvage.
