The business of sports: are greedy owners and players hurting pro leagues?
Article Abstract:
Professional athletics have become a fast-growing big business in the US, with the combined hockey, basketball, baseball and football franchises worth $11.4 billion and increasing in value an average of 14% annually. Sports law has also grown as a field as players become wealthy enough to exert some control over the business of their sports. This influx of big money has led to the perception by some that sports has turned into a business and nothing else. Strikes, lockouts and escalating ticket prices could alienate fans, and Congress may seriously consider removing baseball's exemption from anti-trust laws.

High school sports
Article Abstract:
The great professional sports players began to show their winning abilities in high school, making school a valuable training ground for college and pro sports. Young athletes appear to be well served by the system, but problems of drug use, low academic achievement, and poor sportsmanship have caused concern. Drug use is common to improve performance despite consequences while practice takes time away from studies. Coaches are also under pressure because sports injuries can result in law suits and recruiting is carefully scrutinized.

Gender equity in sports: does federal law help female athletes by hurting men?
Article Abstract:
Controversy exists about federal law promoting gender equity in sports, with critics claiming that female athletes benefit at the expense of male athletes. The 1972 Education Amendments' Title IX is the linchpin of policy, by banning sex discrimination in any educational programs which receive federal money. In 1996, girls' sports in high school surpassed 1971 levels eightfold, an indication of Title IX's effectiveness.
