Gunning for Maris and Mantle: the legendary 1961 Yankees' home-run record is threatened by - it must be a misprint - the Oakland A's
Article Abstract:
The Oakland A's had 179 home runs as of early Aug 1996, which means that they will have 270 home runs by the end of the baseball season if they continue at that pace. That would be 30 more home runs than the New York Yankees had in 1961, when Maris hit 61 and Mantle hit 54 home runs.
