The road to Chaman: warriors, bandits and smugglers have long been drawn to Chaman, a dusty frontier town on Pakistan's border with Afghanistan. Michael Maher travelled there as yet another war envelops this unruly outpost
Article Abstract:
An ABC journalist and his Pakistani companion travel the wastelands of eastern Afghanistan where Kalashnikov rifles have replaced apple trees as the most prized possession. Afghanistan is at peace when at war is a common belief among observers. Poverty, which engenders violence, desperation, and hoplessness, defines the area around Chaman.
