Mexico adds capacity with IPP construction
Article Abstract:
The power industry in Mexico is involved in two major projects, namely, the Samalayuca II in Juarez, Mexico, and Merida III. Samalayuca was able to survive the country's peso crisis in December 1994, and although it had to spend four years to close, it still stands as a huge success in Mexico. Power demand by 2004 is projected to be at 10,000 MW. The 450 MW Merida III project is gas-fired and is the country's first IPP. It is being constructed in the Yucatan state by a group involving AES Corp. of Virginia, Nichimen of Japan and Grupo Hermes of Mexico. At present, the financial community is still wary of the risks in Mexico, but the country is regarded as possessing one of the biggest potential in the world's power markets.

Cardinal SNCR
Article Abstract:
American Electric Power (AEP), together with a number of partners, is collaborating in a project that will demonstrate selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) to cut NOx emissions from steam generating plants. Buckeye Power Inc., Allegheny Power Systems, Baltimore Gas & Electric, Cinergy, East Kentucky Power Cooperative, First Energy, New England Electric Service, Southern Company Services, Tennessee Valley Authority and Wisconsin Electric Power Co. are also participating in the demonstration program. SNCR will be integrated at AEP's 600 megawatt Cardinal Plant Unit 1 power generation facility in Brilliant, OH, with operations expected by early 1999.
