The European Medicines Evaluation Agency: role of experts in drug assessment
Article Abstract:
The European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA) and a new European system for the authorization of pharmaceutical products have been established. The objectives and tasks of the EMEA cover several areas such as product safety and efficacy, singular evaluation process, product authorization and surveillance, access to innovative therapy and drugs, information campaign, consumer protection and pharmaceutical research. A balanced representation of pharmacology experts from Member States has also been ensured.

Genetic approaches to drug dependence
Article Abstract:
The possibility that drug dependence may be partly due to underlying genetic factors motivated the breeding of animals with homozygous gene loci. Lines of sensitized and unsensitized animals were developed by inbreeding for several generations. In the process, the importance of genetic factors to the chosen trait is visibly underlined. Genetic mapping aids in correlating certain gene loci with the chosen trait to be studied and provides an insight on the relationship of gene and drug abuse trait.

Protease-mediated signalling: new paradigms for cell regulation and drug development
Article Abstract:
Studies in protease-mediated cell signalling are discussed. Proteases generate hormone-like signals through various mechanisms, the most interesting of which is the mechanism involving proteolytically revealed tethered activating peptides which stimulate the thrombin receptor and protease-activating receptor 2. This protease-specific mechanism can also be compared to the nonspecific proteolytic activation of the insulin receptor.
