Remembering Vietnam: subjectivity and mourning in American new realist writing
Article Abstract:
New realist writing uses images of Vietnam and mourning for those lost in Vietnam to combat the homogeneity of consumer culture. Both consumer culture and the Vietnam War generate unfulfilled desires but consumer culture wants things while wishing for the dead to return are the desires generated by Vietnam. Vietnam becomes a symbol of identity within a culture that assimilates everyone and everything, burying distinctions based on sex, race and class that are emphasized by Vietnam. Examples of new realist writing are 'In Country' and 'Machine Dreams.'

In search of Al Schmid: war hero, blinded veteran, everyman
Article Abstract:
Marine Al Schmid was severely wounded but managed to kill 200 Japanese soldiers during the battle at the Tenaru River on Guadalcanal in Aug. 1942. For his heroism, he received the prestigious Navy Cross from Pres. Roosevelt, and his life and war experience became the subject of a book which became the basis for a film. An analysis of the tension between the cultural process of creating Schmid's hero image and Schmid's need to live his personal life is presented.
