Making a killing: an interview with Elmore Leonard

Article Abstract:

Elmore Leonard is an outstanding writer of American crime fiction and has published over 29 novels. His pre-writing research is mainly about plot. The characters begin to take on life as they occupy a position in the plot. Leonard has had many influences such as Ernest Hemingway and Richard Bissell, but, though he follows Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, he does not believe that they realistically portrayed either the activities or personal traits of private investigators. Leonard's work has not been successfully adapted to the screen since his characters do not produce pyrotechnics.
