All you never knew about the Net...

Article Abstract:

Tim Berners-Lee, an Englishman, pioneered the World Wide Web. He read physics at Oxford University, and worked for Plessey, D.G. Nash, and Cern, a nuclear physics research laboratory. In 1980, whilst at Cern he wrote Enquire, a computer program, a database of notes which could be connected without any structure being imposed, which led to the Web in 1989. People tend not to know about Berners-Lee, nor to realise that the Web was intended to be interactive, nor that the W3 Consortium directs the development of the Web.

Guinea-pigs running after a mouse

Article Abstract:

There are over a million computer programmes in the US. The main disadvantage of the US' early information technology development is that most firms have hundreds of mainframe computers which they cannot afford to get rid of. European firms, later to develop are installing cheaper, lightweight personal computers. Computer software is very cheap in the US compared to Europe. Very often this is because they are first versions (version 1.0) which are never exported to Europe because of their tendency to fail.

Putting psychics to the test

Article Abstract:

There has been a strong growth in anti-science over recent years, according to magician James Randi. He is extremely sceptical about claims of paranormal powers, and has even gone as far as to offer $1,073,000 to anyone who can demonstrate psychic powers under controlled conditions. He believes that it is a great loss to science if extensive testing and debate cannot be undertaken in relation to a claimed psychic ability.
