Rupert Murdoch looks set to become the most powerful media magnate in the world. He is already involved in book publishing, newspapers, film-making and television broadcasting, and is now establishing a strong presence in new information services. His power is based on communications technology and the marketplace, and he has now reached a position where he has become more influential than many politicians. However, he is keen to establish strong links with politicians such as Labour party leader Tony Blair.

The bottom line of money, the BBC and rehabilitation

Article Abstract:

The BBC's 140 million pounds sterling pay-TV deal with cable and satellite channel packager Flextech was the result of a growing awareness at the BBC of changing conditions in the world of broadcasting, according to BBC commercial arm Chief Executive Bob Phillis. Many observers acknowledge that Phillis played a key role personally in the deal. He rejects the idea that he is empire-building, even though the deal will give the BBC a strong presence in South America, Europe, the US and Asia.

The magic of television - and Mr Murdoch

Article Abstract:

The power of the media has continued to grow in the UK during the period 1986-1996. This has in turn boosted the power of media baron Rupert Murdoch. Most recently, he has been playing a key role in developments in the television broadcasting sector. His BSkyB operation now has 3.8 million satellite and 1.4 million cable subscribers, and has become the 16th-largest company in the UK. He also retains a strong position in the newspaper industry.
