Gene genius that cuts out the need for vivisection

Article Abstract:

Research into drugs for brain disorders, cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases is concentrating on the techniques of gene jockeys who manipulate DNA. Scientists rarely need to test on animals because of this. Gene jockeys grow human proteins in cells from different organisms. The receptors in these engineered cells are screened for their reaction to many chemicals. Potential anti-inflammatory drugs are tested by transferring the gene coding into a virus, which creates the molecule. Anti-cancer drug research also depends on engineered cells.

At last, the secret of internal bliss is revealed

Article Abstract:

The most active ingredient of cannabis is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabis transforms memory, perception, mood and movement. Scientists have discovered a chemical, anandamide, in the brain, which has the same effects. It may be relevant to schizophrenia and depression. Evidence showed there must be a specific receptor for THC in some brain cells. The National Institute of Mental Health in Maryland had previously discovered substance P, for which there was no known purpose. This receptor responds to THC.

What lies at the bottom of chromosome 11?

Article Abstract:

The rare heritable disorder Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) is a progressive degenerative condition which affects nerves in the cerebellum, the part of the brain which controls movement and limb control. Sufferers have a wide range of clinical features, and are susceptible to cancer and infection. Scientists have recently detected the defective gene which causes the disorder, and may now be able to develop a diagnostic test to identify carriers more accurately.
