Article Abstract:

Nobody has yet been convicted of the murder in 1995 of Joan Francisco, a very successful 27-year-old black gynaecologist. The police state that lack of evidence makes it impossible to bring to trial Tony Diedrick, a former boyfriend whom Joan Francisco's family believe to be responsible for the murder. However, the family have refused to accept that no further action should be taken, and is now bringing a claim for assault and battery against him. Under civil proceedings, he will be obliged to mount a defence and give evidence.

A fisherman's tale

Article Abstract:

The collision between The Silvery Sea, a 124 ft, 265-ton purser from Mallaig, Scotland, and the 4,155-ton German coaster Merkur on 14 Jun, 1998, led to the deaths of four fishermen from Mallaig and one from a neighbouring village. This tragedy has had a devastating impact on the close-knit community in Mallaig, especially as it was so unexpected, given that the weather was good. The men who died were well known to most people, but their deaths have particularly affected those with whom they fished in the past.
