Toward individualized evidence-based medicine: five 'N of 1' trials of methylphenidate in geriatrics patients

Article Abstract:

This study uses individualized trials to investigate the effects of methylphenidate on depression and dementia-related apathy in older patients. Findings indicate that three of the patients experienced improvements in depression or apathy, one subject became more depressed, and the remaining patient was removed from the study due to complications.

Systemic lupus erythematosus presenting as a subacute delirium in an 82-year-old woman

Article Abstract:

This article presents a case study of an elderly woman with subacute delirium associated with systemic lupus erythematosus. After several weeks of treatment with prednisone, a corticosteroid, the neuropsychiatric manifestations diminished, the patient regained lost weight, and she resumed daily activities without residual cognitive difficulty.

New drugs for old folks: the evidence-based argument for newer antidepressants

Article Abstract:

This article examines the use of newer antidepressant medications to treat depressive symptoms in elderly patients. Findings indicate that newer antidepressants are both safe and effective when used with geriatric patients and that adverse effect profiles and patient preferences are similar across types of antidepressant medications.
