Impression management in computer-based interviews: the effects of input modality, output, modality, and distance
Article Abstract:
The social desirability effects of computer-assisted self-administration (CASI) were examined according to three variables: distance, input modality and output modality. The social desirability benefits of CASI were compared through interviewer-administered surveys. A total of 125 undergraduate students who were made to answer a survey from a supposed job recruitment firm on the attitudes and opinions of college students nationwide. The findings indicate that there is a 'big brother effect' in CASI surveys and that special measures should be taken to counteract possible social desirability effects of long distance data collection systems.
