The surface roughness of a rubber soling material determines the coefficient of friction on water-lubricated surfaces
Article Abstract:
An experiment was conducted to prove that roughness is a major determinant of the coefficient of friction (CoF) of a footwear soling material. Five pairs of shoes were soled with the same rubber material, with four pairs abraded by different levels of grit to yield a range of roughness values. When the CoF of the five solings was measured using the walking traction method, it was found that nearly all of the grip is caused by the surface roughness of the soling compound. Results provide the first evidence that any specification of flooring by measuring coefficient of friction based on dry surfaces could result in a rise in the number of injuries caused by slipping on the wet surfaces.

Jill-in-a-box
Article Abstract:
There are few women in top political or business positions in Europe and the US, even though women now account for a significant proportion of the labour force in these countries. There are also no apparent links between having a reasonable number of women in politics and having a reasonable number of women in top business positions. There are mixed views about why women are still failing to gain top business positions. Some observers attribute this to a lack of general management experience among women, while others point to women being less committed to their careers than men.

A tale of two cities
Article Abstract:
Detroit, MI, is in many ways two cities. The city has a largely black, low-income population and is suffering through all the social ills that accompany poverty. The suburbs have a largely white, comparatively prosperous population that seems mostly indifferent to the city.
