US develops permanent magnet propulsion
Article Abstract:
The US Navy awarded a $50-million contract to Lockheed Martin to develop an Integrated Power System (IPS). The IPS modular power system will generate energy for the electrical and propulsion needs of the US Navy's Surface Combatant-21st Century generation ships. Northrop and Grumman Marine Systems, Kaman Electromagnetics Corp. and Newport News Shipbuilding will also develop a 9,200 kW (12,500 bhp) electric drive motor based on a $15.6 million joint contract from the US Navy.
