Terfo: survival of a weaving tradition in New Guinea

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern production of 'terfo,' a type of cloth woven by the indigenous Sobei community in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Topics addressed include the making and dyeing of the thread, the cloth's social, economic and religious functions, the history of the Sobei, and the cloth's distinction as representative of the types made by early Austronesians.

History and the birds of paradise: Surprising connections from New Guinea

A study seeks to explain how the characteristics of a natural species like the iridescent bird of paradise can influence human history. The findings challenge how people think about history, including the commonly held view of New Guinea as a remote island that has remained isolated from the tides and currents of world history.
