Polycystins and mechanosensation in renal and nodal cilia

Article Abstract:

Studies on polycystic kidney disease (PKD) identify many of the molecular players that should help solve the issue of how the renal cilium senses fluid flow. The recent breakthroughs in PKD research is reviewed and the role of the polycystin signaling complex in mediating mechanosensory function by the primary cilium of renal epithelium as well as of the embryonic node is discussed.

Eye development: a view from the retina pigmented epithelium

Article Abstract:

Melanosome, a lysosome-related organelle devoted to the biosynthesis and storage of the melanin pigments, is a characteristic of the cells of the retina pigment epithelium (RPE), which is a highly polarized and specialized monolayered epithelium. Retinoid metabolism is controlled by the RPE, which acts as a multifunctional and indispensable component of the vertebrate eye.

Murine Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome genes: regulators of lysosome-related organelles

Article Abstract:

In mouse the genes that regulate vesicle trafficking to specialized lysosome-related organelles including platelet dense granules and melanosomes are identified by positional cloning. The context of HPS genes on physiological processes including immune recognition, neuronal functions and lung surfactant trafficking is discussed.
