Protistan grazing analysis by flow cytometry using prey labeled by in vivo expression of fluorescent proteins

Article Abstract:

The flow cytometry was used to study grazing by a marine hetrotrophic flagellate Paraphysomonas imperforata on live bacterial cells genetically modified to express the fluorescent protein markers green fluorescent protein (GFP) and red fluorescent protein (RFP). The results showed that grazing preference of Paraphysomonas imperforata is influenced by prey type, size, and condition but is not affected by GFP and RFP expression.

Extensive variation in intracellular symbiont community composition among members of a single population of the wood-boring bivalve Lyrodus pedicellatus (Bivalvia: Teredinidae)

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the extent of variation of the symbiont communities among individuals of the Lyrodus pedicellatus species, by the qualitative examination of the diversity, abundance, and pattern of occurrence of symbiont ribotypes. It was observed that the microbial endosymbiont populations showed both the complex and dynamic nature.

Application of flow cytometry to segregated kinetic modeling based on the physiological states of microorganisms

Article Abstract:

Flow cytometry (FC) was used to characterize and assess the physiological states of microorganisms along with the classical plate-counting method. The technique determined that a large number of cells were in a viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state which resulted in a subpopulation much larger than the damaged cell subpopulation.
