Talking trash: legitimacy, impression management, and unsystematic risk in the context of natural environment

Article Abstract:

Firms earn when their environmental legitimacy performance with respect to the natural environment confirms to stakeholders' expectations. Analyzing media reports and stock prices of 100 firms over a five-year period, the authors have concluded that environmentally legitimate firms incur less unsystematic stock markets risk than illegitimate firms. They also opine that firms with low environmental legitimacy could lessen this risk by communicating their responsibility towards the natural environment.
