AUSTRIA: DISCOUNTED END EQUIPMENT WITH UTA

Article Abstract:

UTA , the Swisscom subsidiary that was originally set up by Austrian regional power companies, is offering discounted end equipment for new subscribers of its fixed-line telephone service. From the beginning of October 1999 business clients can get an ISDN exchange of Ericsson Schrack BusinessCom cheaper. Private subscribers can get discounts of up to Sch 800 for telephones and modems if they sign a subscription for a minimum of 6 to 12 months, depending on the particular device. There is also a minimum monthly phone bill of Sch 198. UTA is cooperating with Media/Saturn, Vobis and a number of specialist electrical and telecom retailers.

AUSTRIA: TELEKOM WILL HAVE TO CUT RETENTION FEE

Article Abstract:

Heinrich Otruba, head of Austria's Telecom Control Commission (TCK) says that TCK aims to bring about a reduction of the retention fee charged by Telekom Austria for putting through calls from its fixed-line network to mobile phone networks by the end of March 2000. According to the mobile phone operator One , Telekom's margin with the retention fee is 40%, while at Swisscom it is 30%, at Deutsche Telekom 20% and at Tele Danmark 14%.

Telephone Network Service (TNS) claims to be the first company in Austria to offer a calling card for fixed-line telephony. It is cooperating with ITS of the UK. Customers buy a pre-paid card worth Sch 100, 200, 500 or 1,000, with which they can make calls in Austria and abroad by using a toll-free access number and a personal identification number. TNS aims at a turnover of Sch 1.2bn by the year 2004. *
