AUSTRIA: GERMANS EYEING ENERGIE AG

Article Abstract:

The German energy groups E.On and Ruhrgas expressed their interest in acquiring stakes in the Upper Austrian public power company Energie AG Oberosterreich. The two companies did not submit bids for the Austrian power company, as a decision by the Upper Austrian parliament forbids a sale of the company to producers of nuclear power. Ruhrgas is a competitor of Oberosterreichische Ferngas, in which Energie AG holds a 50% stake. Bids were submitted for Energie AG by Energie Allianz of EVN, Wiener Stadtwerke and ESG of Linz and by Verbund . The consultancy company Finadvice is to assist in the evaluation of the offers, which is to take place by 5 December 2000. However, both of the two bids are said to be insufficient for the Upper Austrian government.
