AUSTRIA: MIXED RESULTS FOR FOOD INDUSTRY

Article Abstract:

The industry federation reports that in 1999 the turnover of the Austrian food and drink industry declined by 2.9% to Sch 74.5bn. The number of companies decreased 5.9% to 269 and employment 5.6% to 28,487 jobs. On the other hand, for the first time for more than a decade Austria recorded a surplus in foreign trade in agriculture-based products with a high value-added input. The exports of such products amounted to Sch 14.2bn and imports Sch 13.1bn. Successful product groups included energy drinks and bakery products. According to figures by the central statistics office, Austria's overall exports of agricultural and food products increased 15.6% to Sch 43bn in 1999, while imports grew 3.7% to Sch 60.2bn. Half of the deficit is attributed to products that are not grown but just processed in Austria.

AUSTRIA: FOOD INDUSTRY WORKING ON NEW QUALITY LABEL

Article Abstract:

The Austrian food industry association is investigating the possibility of creating a new label to symbolise the quality of Austrian food products. The industry has decided to give up the A sign that was used for about 2,000 products, half of them food products. In order to be allowed the A sign, the product had to have an Austrian value-added of more than 50%. Producers say that the A sign was of importance especially on export markets.
