Austria/US: Miba expands as bearings supplier
Article Abstract:
The Austrian engine parts producer Miba is reducing its dependence on the automotive industry by taking over Federal Mogul Bearings in the US. Following the acquisition of the McConnelsville, Ohio-based company with a net turnover of US$ 33mn, the share of the automotive industry of Miba's turnover falls to less than 50%. In 2000 Miba turnover amounted to EUR 290mn. Federal Mogul Bearings is a supplier of bearings for diesel locomotives. With the US company, Miba becomes the world's leading producer of slide bearings with a market share of 47%. The bearings are used in machines in applications such as ship diesels, car and lorry engines and in tractors and construction machines. Since Federal Mogul Bearings, now called Miba Bearings, does not supply to the US automotive industry, it has not been affected by the problems of the automotive industry there.

AUSTRIA: MIBA FORECASTS 1999 RESULTS

The Austrian company Miba expects a 5% increase in turnover to Sch 3.2bn in the fiscal year to 31 January 2000. Profit on ordinary activities is forecast to grow 7% to Sch 290mn. Miba's clients in the automotive industry in France and Italy have benefited from the car boom there. Demand for sintered parts has recovered since May 1999. A satisfactory development of business is reported also in the field of sliding bearings.

US: MIBA TO BUY PLAIN BEARING FACTORY

Miba Bearings, the US subsidiary of the Austrian automotive component supplier, inked a letter of intent with Federal-Mogul Corporation, Ohio. Miba Bearings intends to buy a plain bearing factory in McConnelsville. The factory makes components for the worldwide locomotive industry.
